9th Annual 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios

October 15-16, 2011

What: Over 40 studios, alternative spaces, galleries, and cafes from around the Pilsen neighborhood will gather once again to host one of the city’s largest independently-produced open studios.  The 9th annual 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios, one of the premiere events of the citywide Chicago Artists Month, will feature the work of more than 80 artistsresiding in the Pilsen area, as well as other local, national, and international artists invited to exhibit at select galleries.Last year, over 4,000 people descended onto Pilsen to enjoy a family-friendly celebration of art, culture and community.

Special Events include: Student Showcase: Showcase featuring artwork made by Pilsen youth from Jungman School, Juarez and Pilsen Academy, and Perez, Pickard, Ruiz, and Whittier Elementaries. Thursday, October 13, 4:30-7:30pm, Fine and Performing Arts Center, Juarez Academy, 1450 W. Cermak Road.

Made in Pilsen VI:  A gallery exhibit of Pilsen-based artists.  Friday, October 14, 5pm-9pm, Prospectus Gallery, 1210 W. 18thSt.

Mural walks on On Sat., Oct. 15 and Sun., Oct. 16, both at 2pm, led by artist Jose Guerrero. Meeting location at Colibri Studio Gallery.

Free art workshops for the Day of the Dead – Artists from Pros Arts Studio will be co-creating on site at Colibri Gallery large-scale puppets, decorated carts and procession props such as banderitas de papel picado, noisemakers, cempaxuchil paper flowers and masks.

Pilsen Soundtrack 2 CD Release/Official After-Party – The release of a compilation CD and  booklet featuring 14 Pilsen-based artists and musical acts ranging from hip-hop, reggae, bomba, and classical music on Saturday, October 15 at the APO Community Arts & Cultural Center (1436 W. 18th St.).


When: Saturday, October 15, noon-8pm – Sunday, October 16, noon-6pm
Where: In Chicago’s Pilsen NeighbhorhoodExtending from Western Ave. to Halsted (16th St. to 24th St.) Colibri Studio Gallery, (2032 W. 18th Street) will be the central location for maps, tours and information of the event, as well as the boarding and departing point for buses taking visitors to the different sites.
